About the school

The International School of the Algarve was founded in 1972 by a group of locals led by Paul and Eva Shelfhaut. Their main purpose was to provide quality education for the children of Portuguese and an international developing community in the most southern province of Portugal. Recently, the school acquired an enviable reputation and international recognition. Today, it teaches students from over 30 countries, the largest groups coming from the UK, the Netherlands, Spain, China, France, Germany etc. The courses take place in small groups, which allow an individual approach, suited to each student. Thanks to the warm and friendly atmosphere, new students are rapidly integrated into school community.

The school is located in Lagoa, a small town with about 6000 inhabitants belonging to the Faro district, Algarve province's administrative center. The region is an attractive and popular tourist destination, offering vast golden beaches, cultural attractions and numerous accommodations with excellent facilities for relaxation, sport and entertainment. The area is known for fishing, the production of wines and local culinary specialties. The school campus is located near the main road that passes along the south coast of Portugal.

Students have access to private buses to reach the nearest villages: Faro, Budens, Lagos, Silves, Albufeira, Vilamoura, etc. Faro international airport is about 40 minutes away by car. The campus occupies an area of 10 hectares and includes 40 classrooms, three scientific laboratories, four art studios, two music rooms, three computer rooms with internet access, a design and technology cabinet, a library, kitchen and a dining room.

The students are accommodated in a hotel which was transformed into a dorm that meets the school and students' needs. It is located close to the school, and has a beautiful view over one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Stdents between 12-14 years old live in double rooms, and the older ones (14-18 years) are hosted in individual rooms. All rooms have private bathroom.
